Fluid Libraries—Automated Processes and RFID

November 30, 2018 Event date: 14.00 to 16.30

The Art Library in the Sitterwerk is dedicating an afternoon to new perspectives and technical possibilities in the field of libraries and archives. International speakers present various large libraries’ concrete projects involving storage systems in storage libraries, RFID-supported smart shelves, and applications for patrons in the library. Specialists also have the opportunity to discuss the needs of their own institution and to talk critically about the advantages and disadvantages of the most recent developments.

Content and Topic
Ralf Depping presents the concept as well as advantages and disadvantages of a fluid library at the University Library in Cologne. The project intends to move a majority of the holdings to an automated storage library, to present holdings virtually in an optimal manner, and to make books available to patrons on RFID smart shelves in the library, with chaotic storage and regular, automatic inventory.

In a look forward, Ute Engelkenmeier and Michael Schaarwächter outline the plans to re-equip the University Library of the Technical University in Dortmund, with, among other things, an inventory robot from the company MetraLabs, and also present the results of study they commissioned on the topic of «RFID in Libraries: Transfer from Industry to Libraries».

Mike Märki provides insights into the planning, setup, and operation of the Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland. What experiences in the three years of operation stand out and what are possible potentials for further development?

Roland Früh, who is responsible for the Sitterwerk Art Library, furthermore describes the dynamic order and RFID applications on site and how they are used by visitors.
