Volume of photographs «Kesselhaus Josephsohn»

Book presentation and exhibition of hand proofs of the photographs by Katalin Deér

February 24, 2008 to April 05, 2008

Within the framework of the Josephsohn exhibition in the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt in the spring of 2008, the volume of photographs, «Kesselhaus Josephsohn», was produced by Sitterwerk and the MMK.

For the book presentation in the Art Library, hand proofs of the photographs by Katalin Deér were exhibited. Displayed in four glass cases for the following weeks were the materials that provided the basis for the images in the publication. Photographs of the spatial situation in the Kesselhaus, enlivened by sculptures, light variations and individuals, in addition to images of individual works presented in the Kesselhaus, form the focus of the sequence of images in the volume of photographs that resulted from them.

The publication «Kesselhaus Josephsohn» is thus not simply a documentation of these works or merely an exhibition catalog. Katalin Deér, herself also a visual artist, has intensively studied these works with her camera in the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St. Gallen over the last six years. The images thus created are a photographic equivalent of Josephsohn's consistent development of a direct plastic language. Deér's photographs communicate a precise view of the effect of the sculptures in the space and of their interplay with one another. Also in her own work as a visual artist, she works consistently on the border between the representation in images and sculptures of built and created structures in the three dimensional reality.

For the publication of these photographs within the framework of a book, the graphic artist István Scheibler along with Katalin Deér and Simone Pallecchi, who were responsible for the editing of the images, created a provocative sequence of images in the classic-simple graphic form of a book.

In the book thus produced, the photographs by Katalin Deér are embedded in short texts edited by Ulrich Meinherz. Udo Kittelmann, Director at the MMK, wrote the foreword and the culture journalist Amine Haase gives the reader objective access to Josephsohn's own perspective on his work in an animated discussion with the artist. Ulrich Meinherz traces the content-related references in Josephsohn's work in an essay. An overview of the biography and bibliography of Hans Josephsohn supplements the text segment, and an index of the images provides identification of the individual works.
