«Hommage à Josephsohn» – Premiere of

Version II in the Museum La Congiunta

September 29, 2012 Event date: 17.00

Hans Peter Frehner has created a new arrangement of his composition «Hommage à Josephsohn», which was already performed in May 2011 in the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, specifically for the performance in the Museum La Congiunta in Giornico (TI). The occasion for this second premiere was originally the 20th anniversary of the existence of the Congiunta, the Josephsohn museum built by Peter Märkli – the fact that Hans Josephsohn passed away a few weeks ago now also makes this concert a type of memorial act for the sculptor to whom this institution is dedicated.

Hans-Peter Frehner is a flutist, composer, and artistic director of the ensemble für neue musik zürich. He first got to know the sculptor Hans Josephsohn personally at the beginning of 1980 and also attended the opening of the Congiunta in 1992. Since then, Hans-Peter Frehner has been obsessed with the idea of writing a piece of music to Josephsohn’s sculptures and reliefs: «In realizing this idea, I would have loved to play on these bronzes – but since this is a sacrilege and ‘touching’ the sculptures in this way is out of the question, it made sense to use exclusively instruments made of the same material as the figures for my sound constructions: tubular bells, crotales, cymbals, gongs ...» In his composition honoring Josephsohn’s work, 63 sound groups of various lengths that flow into each another were created. These sound figures are not, however, associated with individual sculptures – it is rather the case that in the sound compositions by Hans-Peter Frehner, the similarity between each of the unique sculptures by Josephsohn finds an analogy in the similarity between the individual sound figures.

The composition is intended for a reverberant space such as in the Museum «La Congiunta» or in the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, where it was performed on a spatial level in May 2011. In the museum «La Congiunta», the audience will also be able to move around the space and thus perceive the composition as a unit along with the sculptures.
