«Josephsohn Bildhauer»

A documentary film by Matthias Kälin and Laurin Merz

May 01, 2007

The documentary film by the two filmmakers presents Josephsohn and his art with great authenticity. The film has been shown in various Swiss cinemas since mid-May 2007.
Matthias Kälin and Laurin Merz developed the trust of Hans Josephsohn with sensitivity over more than two years. They thus established immanent access to his personality as an artist and to his work. The film shows the sculptor not only in direct action with putty knife and plasterer's hatchet, but also in the contemplation of the specific challenges to be met by him as a sculptor. Josephsohn involves the two filmmakers and thus also the public in his reflections on the nature of art and on the responsibilities of an artist. The footage of his works in the Museum Congiunta in Giornico, in his studio in Zurich and in the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St. Gallen coherently testify to a direct understanding of Josephsohn's work, which Matthias Kälin and Laurin Merz wonderfully express with the vocabulary of the documentary film.
