Palais de Tokyo, Paris: Rondinone Shows Josephsohn in a Group Exhibition

September 27, 2007 to January 03, 2008

In the fall of 2007, Ugo Rondinone as guest-artist-curator in the Palais de Tokyo in Paris presented a group exhibition with the title «the third mind» with larger work groups by creators of art who are important for him in his own conception of himself as an artist.

For Rondinone, several works by Hans Josephsohn, Bruno Gironcoli, and Ronald Bladen formed the core of his exhibition – around these three «artistic fathers» he arranged a selection of renowned and in part less well known artists. Also included in this exhibition, among others, were Rebecca Warren, Urs Fischer, and Robert Gober.

Josephsohn was represented with his work group of «reclining figures» a series of works that he began in the 1960s and took up again in the 1990s after a break of nearly thirty years. During the preparations for the exhibition, gave renewed attention to his works from this work group from the 1960s and 70s, which since resuming this cycle in the 1990s, appear in a new light.

In the summer of 2007, preparation was done in the Kesselhaus for the presentation of Josephsohn's works in Paris: in cooperation with Rondinone and Josephsohn, it was possible here to do a test placement of the various works and thus refine the selection of them. The cleared out area of the exhibition space in the Kesselhaus facilitated the process of working out in what relation to one another the various works should be positioned.
