Three large half-figures of Hans Josephsohn in the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen

December 11, 2014 to February 15, 2015

In conjunction with its merger with the municipality of St.Gallen, this year, the municipality of Straubenzell donated a work from Josephsohn’s work group of large half-figures to the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen. The sculpture created in 1995/96 will be presented to the public for the first time along with two other large half-figures already acquired by the Kunstmuseum at an earlier point in time.

Josephsohn created the three half-figures in the period between 1994 and 2003. They count among Josephsohn’s works with a high degree of abstraction, created starting in the late nineteen-eighties. In addition to the so-called reclining figures, the half-figures represent a central work group in his late oeuvre. As in all of his works since the nineteen-forties, in these three works, Josephsohn also deals with the human figure sculpturally, whereby the human body is represented very compactly and fragmentarily: the head, which constitutes more than half of the figure, fuses into a unified whole with the rest of the body. While one can discern facial features in the upper volume, it is less clearly recognizable that the lower volume represents the upper body with arms folded. Based on these sculptures, all of which were cast in brass in the Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen, it is easy to comprehend Josephsohn’s artistic interest in forms, volumes, and proportions.

With the exhibition in the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, sculptures by Josephsohn will be shown in a cultural institution in St.Gallen other than the Sitterwerk for the first time since the solo presentation in 1981 in the Buchhandlung am Rösslitor/Galerie an der Klostermauer. The half-figures will be exhibited in the foyer on the first floor of the Kunstmuseum, which was erected in the neoclassical style in 1877 by Johann Christoph Kunker. The two previously purchased half-figures were on loan for the last year and a half to the newly constructed Fachhochschule St.Gallen, where they were also on view in an entrance situation. After the end of the exhibition, two of the three half-figures, also including the one donated by the municipality of Straubenzell, will be presented in the Fachhochschule once again.
