Venice: Märkli shows Josephsohn and Giacometti at the Biennale Architettura

August 27, 2012 to November 25, 2012

In his contribution to the Biennale Architettura in Venice, Peter Märkli examines two central elements in the history of architecture: the standing human figure as sculpture in architecturally defined space – four walls and a ceiling supported by pillars. The installation of works by Josephsohn and Giacometti in the Arsenal calls attention to its impressive architecture. In their irregular arrangement, the sculptures provide a point of reference between the human figure and the architectural space characterized by its magnificent columns.

«Common Ground» – the shared background that unites architectural culture in all its diversity and differences and which was chosen as the theme by David Chipperfield, the curator of this year’s Biennale Architetura, is thus shown in an exemplary manner in the installation by Peter Märkli based on a leitmotif in the history of architecture: the standing human figure as sculpture and the classical column.
