In the Material Archive (Werkstoffarchiv) in the Sitterwerk, a collection of materials and substances for art is being assembled. A broad spectrum of different materials and substances is used in the development and realization as well as the restoration of artworks. In the Material Archive, samples and test pieces of such materials and substances are processed, systematized and made accessible to artists, architects or monument conservationists.

The catalogue of this collection of materials and substances is being created in cooperation with five partner institutes: the online database MATERIAL ARCHIV encompasses the Sitterwerk’s collection of materials and substances as well as those of the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur (Museum of Applied Arts and Design), the department of “Engineering & Architecture”  and "art & design" of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the Baubibliothek of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), the department of “Architecture, Design & Civil Engineering” of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). The MATERIAL ARCHIV thus offers knowledgeable access to materials and material science for those in design-related professions.
