392 Drawers Offer Insight into Ten Years of Collecting Activities

Ten years of the Sitterwerk—in 2016, the Material Archive is taking a look a special connections and stories relating to the material samples. Many of the material samples have a direct link to the projects and activities surrounding the collection, which has cultivated an exchange with various institutions since it was founded. The holdings are constantly being expanded in cooperation with the network of the Material-Archiv association and the Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen. Guest artists, visitors, and course participants have also left their traces in the archive and added contents to the holdings. The Material Archive therefore offers access to discipline-specific background information as well as further-reaching topics that open up through using the collection. From the wealth of material that has been brought together as a result of this exchange and ongoing projects, it is necessary to respectively make a selection and make it accessible—a task that requires time that cannot always be found in the course of day-to-day operations. The anniversary year of the foundation therefore also provides an impetus to make room for maintaining the collection. This should provide new and surprising insight not only into the 392 drawers, but also into the digital platforms and past collecting activities. This will also create the basis for future experiments and projects. It is time to make the selection of samples as well as the background information associated with them more precise and to examine the contents in greater depth.
