Werkstoffperspektiven (Material Perspectives) - An exhibition

October 24, 2016 to January 15, 2017

Opening: Sunday, October 23, 2016
2 to 5 pm, introduction at 3 pm

The ten-year anniversary of the Sitterwerk — in 2016, the Material Archive is focusing on particular contexts and histories of individual material samples.

They have a direct connection to projects and activities in the surroundings of the collection, which has fostered exchange with various institutions since being established. The collection is undergoing steady expansion in cooperation with the network of the Verein Material-Archiv (Material Archive Association) and the Kunstgiesserei St. Gallen. In addition, guest artists, visitors, and course participants have also left their traces in the archive and supplemented the holdings with contents. The Material Archive thus provides access to specialized background information as well as further-reaching topics that are opened up through the use of the collection. From the wealth of material that has been brought together as a result of this exchange as well as ongoing projects, it is necessary to make a selection and also to make it accessible. In the anniversary year, special attention is being dedicated to this work. With the focus on maintaining the collection, the goal is to provide new and surprising insights not only into the 392 drawers, but also into the digital platforms and past collecting activities.

From October 24, 2016, to January 15, 2017, the exhibition Werkstoffperspektiven  (Material Pespectives) offers a first opportunity to do so. Eleven selected sample specimens positioned in dioramas rather than the drawers make reference to the histories of materials and the collection by means of perspectives, drawings, and texts, compiled by the Material Archive and Theres Senn. With her illustrations, the artist activates the space in the “peep-boxes,” which are integrated into the drawer cabinets, and thus comments from her perspective on the small extracts from the collection.
