Traces of the Sitterwerk at the 57th Venice Biennale

Geoffrey Farmer
A Way Out of the Mirror, Canadian Pavilion
Venice Biennale, May 13 to November 26, 2017

Last summer, the Canadian artist Geoffrey Farmer was a guest at the Sitterwerk, where he developed and transformed the finds, the historical, regional, unexpected, and the archived in his work for the Venice Biennale’s Canadian Pavilion. In collaboration with the Art Library, the Material Archive, and Sitterwerk’s staff and the Kunstgiesserei, an elaborate and complex installation was created, transforming the Canadian Pavilion at the Venetian Giardini into a giant fountain and capturing it in its present form one last time.

Teresa Hubbard/Alexander Birchler
Women of Venice, Swiss Pavilion
Venice Biennale, May 13 to November 26, 2017

The artist duo Hubbard/Birchler represent Switzerland at this year’s Venice Biennale together with the artist Carol Bove. Their work deals with the life and heritage of Alberto Giacometti and the history of the Swiss Pavilion.

Hubbard/Birchler have created a fictional-documentary work on Flora Mayo, Giacometti’s lover. To this end, the artists were, among others, invited to the Sitterwerk as guests where they created a bust, which is based on photographs only found in Flora Mayo’s studio.
