Traces of the Sitterwerk at Documenta 14

Nevin Aladag
Jali, Landesmuseum Kassel
Documenta 14, June 10 to September 17, 2017

Keeping out and letting in, showing and concealing, intimacy and display are important themes in Nevin Aladag’s work. The Turkish artist—who today lives in Berlin—developed her work with light and sight-permeable ceramic bricks for the Documenta in the Sitterwerk’s guest studio. The different clay elements are inspired by Moroccan, Japanese, and European lattice and window ornaments. Glazed in subtle pastel shades and stacked in a screen-like manner, during the Documenta, they draw a filigree, yet firm and insurmountable barrier through the Landesmuseum in Kassel.

Banu Cennetoğlu

BEINGSAFEISSCARY, Portikus Museum Fridericianum
Documenta 14, June 10 to September 17, 2017

The artist Banu Cennetoğlu is also from Turkey, lives in Istanbul, and realized a work for Documenta 14 in the Sitterwerk and in cooperation with the Kunstgiesserei. Reflected in it is her fascination with archiving and disseminating information, ideas and beliefs, using symbols or signs. Banu Cennetoğlu, so to say, «immigrated» the wording of graffiti seen on the wall of the Technical University of Athens—an important place for political insurgency—to Kassel. There, cast in brass, it replaces the lettering MVSEVM FRIDERICIANVM, which has been enthroned in the portico of the museum for decades, and provides provocation in an unobtrusive and complex manner for the duration of the Documenta.
