“My ABC is …”
A series of workshops at the Kunstbibliothek and the Werkstoffarchiv
Putting a book in the wrong place in a library is sabotage, since it then becomes practically impossible for other people to find. The ABCs with their strict order leave very little room to maneuver. The dynamic order of the Kunstbibliothek, however, makes it possible to interpret the ABCs more freely and to define them anew again and again. The aim of the three-part series of workshops called “My ABC is . . .,” is to take advantage of this freedom and make the Kunstbibliothek and Werkstoffarchiv a marketplace for various points of view and notions of order for a specific period of time.
Guests from various areas of expertise are invited to reorganize the collections based on their criteria for a few days and to thus make their research interests visible. Superordinate topics of the three research stays are questions regarding the handling of material resources and thus searching through and interrogating the holdings with respect to information on the origin, extraction, and circularity of raw materials and substances. As the conclusion of the days of each workshop, there is an evening event with a public discussion in which the guests present and discuss the new order that they have left behind in the library space. This order is then retained for a period of one month before disappearing again as a result of the use of the library by regular visitors.

“Mein ABC is elementary”
28th of September till 6th of November
by Ignacio Acosta and Stella Carlsen
Ignacio Acosta and Stella Carlsen are guests at the Sitterwerk. Over the course of three days and as part of the three-part series "My ABC is…," they are rearranging the holdings of the Kunstbibliothek and the Werkstoffarchiv, creating new categories, references and compilations, which offer insights into their areas of research.
Here they devote themselves to the element of copper and its occurrence in the library and materials collection. The artist Ignacio Acosta explores the understanding of places and landscapes that, although often neglected, are of global significance. With his work «Copper Geographies» for example, he has traced the trades routes and life cycles of copper, using different media to document the transformative landscapes of the Atacama desert in Chile where material is mined, and central London, where it is being built with. Stella Carlsen is responsible for the topic of sustainable management at Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen and, among other things, engages with questions around the origin and extraction of the materials used, some of which can be found in the collection of the Werkstoffarchiv. Together with Ignacio Acosta she is invited to search through the library and materials collection from their respective perspectives and to relate the material copper to the subjects of art production and sustainability. On September 28th, their findings, references and insights will be presented in a public discussion. Their display will remain in the Werkstoffarchiv and Kunstbibliothek until November 6th.
The workshop series is supported by Kanton St.Gallen Kulturförderung / Swisslos, Stiftung Temperatio, TISCA Tischhauser Stiftung
