edel unedel
An exhibition in the Material Archive on the coloring and coating of metals. In cooperation with the artist Anita Tarnutzer and the Material-Archiv S8 of the Hochschule der Künste Bern
The natural colors of metals are limited—with the exception of the yellowish color of gold and the reddish color of copper—to shades of gray and their nuances. Whether looking in the mirror, counting coins, or polishing kitchen fittings, the silvery luster of metal shapes our day-to-day life. But such metal surfaces that develop a life of their own, that loose their luster and change color are also familiar. Whether stainless steel or a lustrous patina, there are numerous techniques for coloring and coating metals with which the color spectrum and the qualities of the surface of metal materials can be expanded. The exhibition presents a selection of industrial and manual techniques and links them with an artistic work based on sample panels. In her experimental, long-term projects, Anita Tarnutzer uses the characteristics of non-precious metals to react and retain impressions when put in contact with the sweat of hands or with plant-based ingredients. The triggers for such coloring processes can be stinging nettle, sorrel, and dyer’s chamomile or also the exhibition visitors.
