Virginia Overton, Untitled (hooked), 2025

During her three-month residency at the Sitterwerk Foundation studio house, Virginia Overton (*1971, Nashville/USA, lives in New York) produced works for her solo exhibition “Material Girl” at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur (September 5–November 9, 2025).
During the traditional midnight casting at the 2025 St. Gallen Museum Night, an iron casting in sand was created at the Kunstgiesserei St. Gallen, which is available as an edition. The two hooks of an old construction crane, completely dismantled on site, intertwine to form a kind of heart, a non-functional encounter, a formal kiss, an elementary Pietà.
Virginia Overton is known for large-format sculptures made from found building materials, which she assembles into new, space-related structures. Her works are created in direct dialogue with the location and through a process-oriented, improvisational approach to space and material. Overton has presented her works internationally at venues including the Whitney Museum New York, White Cube London, The Frame New York, the Kunsthalle Bern, and Socrates Sculpture Park New York.
