Open Studio with Vanessa Billy and Virginia Overton
The Sitterwerk Foundation cordially invites you to an open studio event with current guest artists Vanessa Billy and Virginia Overton on Monday, August 11, 2025. Starting at 5 pm, the two artists will provide insight into their current projects. Afterwards, there will be a bar, something to eat, and a surprise that will linger in your memory.
Vanessa Billy (*1978 in Geneva, Switzerland, lives in Zurich) deals with ecological, material, and social issues in her artistic practice. In the Art Library, she will show a series of experiments with animal blood—a material and waste product she has been researching for several years in order to develop bio-based plastic for sculptural works. In doing so, she draws on historical techniques such as bois durci, a mixture of blood and sawdust that was used as an early plastic in the 19th century. Billy's material experiments with animal blood are part of her ongoing exploration of energy, cycles, and our relationship to natural and artificial resources.
Virginia Overton (*1971 in Nashville, USA, lives in New York) is known for her large-scale sculptures made from found building materials, which she transforms into new, spatial structures. Her works are characterized by a process-oriented, improvisational approach to space and material. In conversation with Moritz Lehner (Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen), she provides insight into her current productions for her solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur (opening on September 4). Her works always arise in dialogue with the location, which she understands as an integral part of her sculptural language. Through targeted interventions, condensations, and shifts, she opens up new spatial perspectives.
