Salome Schmuki and Theo Cowley live and work in St.Gallen and Brussels. From October 2016 until spring 2017, they had a residency at the Sitterwerk Gastatelier and developed their projects further.
Salome Schmuki (*1979) is a graphic designer and artist and works on her own as well as collaborative projects. She examines the structure and organization of language, the way in which written language is coded, and relationships and/or disruptions in various aspects of perception and the (sub-)processes involved in it. She has also been interested in, for instance, dyslexia for a long time. Based on different aspects of the reading process, she creates typographic designs in which she resists the uniformity of letters.
Salome Schmuki completed her studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Zurich and the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam and had a two-year scholarship at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Postacademic Institute for Research and Production in Fine Art, Design and Theory, Maastricht. Recent presentations include, et al.: the Frauenpavillion St. Gallen; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen; Mukha Antwerpen; Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, and Komplot, Brussels.
The work of Theo Cowley (*1976) often revolves around aspects of performance. He works with a wide range of media and approaches. His work addresses various social and performative scenes and in doing so examines a range of structures, meanings, aesthetics, and relationships.
He studied at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, and was a resident artist at the Wiels Center of Contemporary Art in Brussels. His work has been shown in the following institutions et al.: Index, Stockholm, as part of the project 3 Days of Navigating; Kunstmuseum Lichtenstein, Vaduz; Wiels Center of Contemporary Art, Brussels; Kaaitheater Performatik Festival, Brussels; Temporary Gallery, Cologne; Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg.
In the Sitterwerk, Theo Cowley is continuing work on several projects, thus, for example, on elements for a planned performance/film. In addition, he is further developing a drawing and a sculptural work, which both emerged from his interest in the organization of movement and action. They worked in the Sittwerk from October 2016 until January 2017.
The open studio in the Sitterwerk took place on January 17, 2017, at 6 pm.
