Open Studios—with Emika Sekine and Stefan Burger and the Launch of a new Sitterwerk Edition
Monday, September 27th 2021, 5—8 p.m., with Korean BBQ from the grill and shiso mojitos
Emika Sekine
In her works, the art student and sculptor Emika Sekine dedicates herself to “specters as positive retrospection.” Since the beginning of July, she has been working very intensively in the Sitterwerk studio on several sculptures that deal with possible broadenings of the imagination, and thus combining materials, forms, and surfaces into pictures: A piece of driftwood leans forward like a blind Narcissus, tumor-like growths made of elaborately laminated polystyrene are combined with industrially produced banisters. On the occasion of the Open Studios, Emika Sekine provides information about the works she has been creating here, which are inspired by old masterpieces, translated into the present in a precise and poetic way.
Stefan Burger
Stefan Burger arrived at the Sitterwerk studio, where he has been working on photographic and sculptural works, at the end of July. For the Open Studio, he is presenting the new Sitterwerk edition ‹Sankt Galler Schwund›.
Starting from the process of shrinkage in the process of casting metal, with ‹Sankt Galler Schwund› Stefan Burger uses loss as a sculptural strategy. The sculpture consists of a laundry drying stand reduced in size by 5 percent, along with a single sock. In contrast to the sculptural process of enlarging to scale, which often requires space, the sculpture ‹Sankt Galler Schwund› cannot only be folded up practically and stowed away behind furniture, but already also comes with the offer of its own dissolution from the very beginning already.
‹Sankt Galler Schwund›, 2021
Cotton sock, powder-coated steel, screen print on a cellulose telescope case, polyurethane foam
122 × 63 × 10 cm
Edition of 10 + AP 2 + SE 2
The edition is accompanied by a special edition (2 pieces) in a rusty version.
Editions as Transformation
Over the course of a year, the Sitterwerk Foundation launches editions at regular intervals, thus also enabling our guest artists to produce/create works during the pandemic and providing financial support for the artists and the Sitterwerk Foundation. This transformation project is kindly supported by the Canton of St. Gallen, Cultural Funding, and the Federal Office of Culture.
Covid Provisions
Due to the current decisions of the Federal Council, we require a COVID certificate from all visitors, which should be shown along with an official identity card. Masks must also be worn in indoor spaces.
