Allyson Vieira (*1979) has been a guest artist in the large project studio of the Sitterwerk since the beginning of July 2013. The invitation of the studio advisory committee was extended at the suggestion of Adam Szymczyk, director of the Kunsthalle Basel. All of the works created during the artist’s stay in the Sitterwerk will be presented in her solo-exhibition in the Kunsthalle Basel, which opens on September 13, 2013.
In her works, the American artist Allyson Vieira examines mythical images from various cultures and epochs and creates sculptures, installations, films, and photographs. In them, she takes up subjects and modes of representation that were developed in antiquity and have been scrutinized again and again. She combines them with the repertoire of the sculptural forms of minimalism, providing new perspectives on the relationship of material, form, and space. Her sculptures made of simple building materials such as concrete, metal, or plaster evoke ideas of architecture as well as of physical work, and remain in the moment between material and form, whereby the traces of the production become their intrinsic characteristic.
Allyson Vieira lives and works in New York. The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Basel is the artist’s first solo-exhibition in an institution.
