ORTHOGONAL ORNAMENTAL ONDULATORIC
At the close of his stay in the Guest Studio of the Sitterwerk, Andreas Karl Schulze presented at the open studio on December 2, 2010 works created on-site. Although the title may at first seem somewhat cryptic, it is, nevertheless, part of the artistic strategy. In the course of the 1990s, Andreas Karl Schulze reduced his language of forms to a small, monochrome-painted square of canvas measuring 5x5 cm. The artist worked diligently on the format and color scale for his basic module.
Andreas Karl Schulze prefers to work in connection with a particular location. In the guest studio, the squares are deployed in wall-works based on grids, balance floating on a thin thread, or are installed in a concentrated manner as tiny objects on a cabinet.
With his quiet yet striking interventions, Andreas Karl Schulze succeeds in placing spaces and viewers in a type of state of uncertainty between enchantment and disenchantment - in which the means of enchantment are always openly present. And disenchantment, in the sense of disillusionment, means that there is actually not much more there than a few simple, basic elements. These light states of uncertainty thus also have a profoundly existential component and are conscious of their fleetingness. Most of the artist's works are artworks for a time, only still palpable on the basis of photographic documents.
Andreas Karl Schulze brings color into the space in the form of small squares of canvas. In doing so, the lightness and fine humor with which the artist implements the formal strictness of the basic grid surprises again and again.
